The Universal
Irie Organity is
an intentional community to be located in the French Quarter
of New
Orleans, Louisiana along the Mississippi
river. This is a grassroots volunteer
organizational mission to clean-up a vacant or condemned building left abandoned
since after the hurricane Katrina. Right now we
are trying to obtain permission to occupy a
vacancy from a prop. owner on Chartres St. (next door to
NOCCA) so we may begin our beautification effort to open up these
potential spaces for art studios, intentional living
and/or office space that will not only provide rent/lease to the prop.
owner but also provide a home for our organization.
The intention of doing
volunteer work to restore this potential community space is from simple "Irie"
inspiration to create a welcome home for volunteers & travelers (our
international community) to visit the historic French Quarter. Together we
may provide an opportunity to serve the local community with organic, fair
trade, and vegitarian food in a coffee/artshop style venue. There is love
for the idea to create a kind of artists "co-op" for a free soup
kitchen/bakery to volunteer in local farmer's markets, art fairs, as well
as other regional & national events. There is inspiration for showing film,
music, poetry, and workshops while offering free recycling services to the local
community as part of a beautification effort already underway in New
Orleans.
Volunteers
Our organization would not be possible without the generosity
and support of our volunteers. Together we are intentionally creating a
community through cooperation and serving. Every week we wil join in a
circle as a prayer for peace for our world and our mission here at the
organity.
*The circle joins together above in the shape of a heart as a collective
meditation for peace in the Modoc National Forest in California (in July of
2005).
